Awakening The Mystic Within
The Peace of Nothingness
"“Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books
that brings them to their perfect readers.”
"
- - Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Burrows
The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Society
I have just returned from my European journey to Spain and France. One of my visits was to Montsegur, one of the more well-known Cathar places in Southern France. I visited early in the morning when the mountain was shrouded in cloud, and had the gift of solitude and quiet as this magnificent mountain and the surrounding mountains gradually revealed themselves to me. Perhaps there is also a homing instinct in the mountains that draws us to them, as equally as that homing instinct finding itself within us. Whichever way it works, or in both the ways it works, this mountain held something deep and rich for me.
I cried deep tears for the previous inhabitants as they were so mercilessly persecuted. I wandered among the ruins of their home and looked down upon the valleys that stretched as far as my eye could see. And then I sat and listened into the silence. There was nothing. I listened even more, and there was even a deeper nothingness. And underneath this, there was peace. A deeper peace I have not known, anywhere at anytime.
My time in France was very deeply emotional. When I thought I could not feel any more or any deeper, a welling inside my belly would take me further down into even deeper feelings. It was quite an extraordinary (and exhausting) journey, yet, one of deep purification and ultimate joy. And if I had not been willing to feel, I would not have experienced the liberation that I did, nor the peace that I did.
I wonder how often in our lives we deny, side-step, or put off, our very deep emotions, preferring not to feel them and busying ourselves with anything else so that we don’t have to feel them. And yet therein lies our liberation. As our earth, and we, journey through the purification let us not be afraid to feel, let us cry those deep tears and cleanse our hearts. May our homing instincts take us to those places we need to visit, whether physical or emotional, or both. Let us decide to liberate ourselves from any fear of feeling and know that true peace awaits us on the other side.
A reminder that I blogged as I journeyed through Europe. www.mysticpeace.com/mblog.htm Soon there will be entries on my visit to the phenomenal Chartres Cathedral.
