Clare of Assisi, c.1193-94 was born to an exceptional woman, named Ortulana, who entered into a rare independence for her time; creating spiritual community in her home and taking unaccompanied pilgrimages both within Italy and abroad. While pregnant with Clare she undertook a rigorous pilgrimage to the shrine of St.Michael in Mount Gargano, Italy. At the shrine, she heard these words: "You will give birth to a light that will shine brilliantly in the world." Taking the prophecy seriously, Ortulana named her child Chiara, or Clare, meaning "light."
Clare's life of listening to God began at a young age. She followed the example of the women in her home, but quickly surpassed them in complete trust in the grace of God. She sold off her inheritance at eighteen, abandoned her family home in the dark of night to meet and live with Francis of Assisi, and refused any type of ownership or security. Instead she turned her face to the Divine. Her family, and in particular her father, did not support her spiritual path and she encountered much opposition, including an attempted physical removal from her new home. This opposition caused a "spiritual stubborness" or a deepening of dedication to her path.
It is an interesting question to pose to ourselves - when we meet opposition to our path do we become despondent or do we hold firmly to the gift that we have been given? In last month's newsletter we asked "Soul, what do you want of me?" Are we prepared to listen for the answer and then follow it no matter what opposing forces we encounter, including our own fears?
Clare's life became one of devotion to love and compassion; lived through her ardent love for Francis, and for her community. She understood that she was being endlessly created by God, and all that was required of her was to consciously come into this divine presence. She was the stillness in the present moment and the power of enormous faith and knowledge. The knowledge that she was completely cared for.
How do we live our faith and knowledge in the world? Are we the stillness in the present moment? Do we allow ourselves to be endlessly created by the divine presence? Are we still seeking recognition in and by the world or are we solely turning our face to the Divine?
Some questions to ponder as we journey into the silence of love.

JOURNEYING INTO LOVE: ASSISI PILGRIMAGE & RETREAT

This pilgrimage will focus on the teachings and life of Clare of Assisi. It will also include teachings from my new book on Sacred Companionship. We will learn about Clare and Francis and their most beautiful and extraordinary relationship, which was based on the spirit of sacred love. We will learn how we can incorporate this same love into our daily living with our various companions, whether intimate, friends, or healing connections. We have many companions on this earth.
We have the great honor to gather and meditate in a very sacred space right in Assisi, which is dedicated to all the world religions and contemplation. We also have exclusive use of a converted monastery, where we will all be staying. It is also right in Assisi and has a lovely little terrace that looks out over the valley. Very picturesque in the misty mornings. I feel blessed that I can offer these places to you.
