Quietness of Heart
“Humility is perpetual quietness of heart…It is never to be fretted, or vexed, or irritated, or sore, or disappointed. It is to expect nothing, to wonder at nothing that is done to me, to feel nothing done against me. It is to be at rest when no one praises me, and when I am blamed and despised. It is to have a blessed home in myself…and be at peace as in a deep sea of calmness, when all around and above is troubled.”
Canon T.T. Carter
With the increased energy in our world, expressing itself through anger and outrage, earthquakes and floods, and a frenzied pace of living, it is a rare to experience a genuine quietness of heart. It is, at times, as if the whirlwind of world energy picks us up and spins us in a vortex causing us to needlessly fill up our days and time with something, anything. And yet, what is required is a steadying and a deepening into self, a removal from all worry and irritation, and a returning to the calm and peace within.
Sometimes this returning within asks us to descend through layers of loneliness, feelings of emptiness, or fearing the unknowable, and yet, when we make that descent we pass through those layers and come to abide in the great peace of the silence of our soul. If we pause in our descent and identify with any of the feelings on the way we fail to see and experience the truth of who we are. As Hafiz writes, I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in darkness, the Astonishing Light of your own Being!
Perhaps during this month it may be a good practice to notice if you are busying yourself unnecessarily, and then return to the quietness of your heart. If you find yourself irritated or disappointed or falling into victimhood, pause, and return to the quietness of your heart. The quietness never departs it is only we who move away from it. May this truth of quietness, be our gift to the world in this time of turmoil. May it be our gift to ourselves.
