How many people are wandering on this earth today, looking for love? How many broken hearts are crying out to be loved? There is a deep longing and sadness that is carried in our hearts, individually and collectively, as we traverse this land in search of love. Of course the real search is that of our own selves. It is coming to know that we are the love that we are looking for.
There is the story of the little fish that was told that without water he could not live, and he became very afraid. He swam to his mother, and trembling, told her about the need for water. The mother said, "Water, my dear, is what we are swimming in." How similar are we? We are swimming in an ocean of love, but still we cry that we are thirsty.
John of the Cross understands this longing and tells us the cure is to come into the very presence of God. Presence is the ultimate act of intimacy. It is laying the mind, soul, and body, down in a generous act of surrender. It is allowing for the genuine flow of love and deep soulful communication. It is a falling from the mind into the very love of self. In doing this, we become intimate partners with our selves, with others, and with God. These rivers of intimacy merge into the ocean of love; each river feeding the other and being a tributary of growth and expansion.
Kabir Helminski in "The Knowing Heart," says that "Love is not the goal of anything; it is the cause of everything." Know that whatever is occurring in your life is love knocking on the door of your soul. Do not run away, do not try to change it, open the door and greet it as the Beloved coming to visit you, for it is. Graciously invite your Lover in and open your heart to what is really being said. Learn to be intimate with yourself. Learn to be totally present to yourself, and your world will open into beautiful intimate connections, at every moment, with every being.
